Carissimi Confratelli e Laici della Famiglia Orionina. Vi scrivo dal Kenya, dalla nostra comunità di Langata – Nairobi. Da circa un mese premeva nel cuore la volontà di invitare la Congregazione ad aiutare le popolazioni del “Corno d’Africa” (Somalia, Etiopia, Kenya Nord Est) colpite dalla grave siccità e crisi alimentare che sta sterminando migliaia di persone. Assieme al Delegato per le Missioni di lingua inglese, Fr. Malcolm Dyer, abbiamo preso contatto con il vescovo della Diocesi di Marsabit, Kariuki Peter Kihara, a noi già conosciuto, prima per telefono e poi durante la visita di P. Malcolm a Marsabit, il 5-6 settembre (vedi Informazione allegata).Il Vescovo ha accolto la nostra intenzione di dare un aiuto alla Diocesi come una vera Provvidenza. Ha indicato vari tipi di intervento in favore delle fasce più deboli. Marsabit è la Diocesi nella regione a Nord Est del Kenya, colpita dalla siccità in modo drammatico. Inoltre, quella zona del Kenya deve far fronte anche a una massa enorme di profughi che scappano dalla vicina Etiopia sperando in sorte migliore. A Dadaab, città ai confini con la Somalia, accoglie attualmente il più grande complesso di campi profughi. Secondo le stime dell'agenzia ONU, i vari campi di Dadaab accolgono circa 440.000 rifugiati somali. 
IL PROGETTO “DON ORIONE FOR MARSABIT”.
Insieme con Don Eldo Musso, consigliere per le opere di carità, Fr Malcolm, delegato per la missione del Kenya, e Don Alessio Cappelli, responsabile della Fondazione Don Orione, e con i Confratelli del Kenya, abbiamo elaborato un progetto denominato “DON ORIONE FOR MARSABIT”, per aiutare la gente e soprattutto i bambini della Diocesi di Marsabit. La Madre generale Suor Maria Mabel ha dato la disponibilità anche delle Piccole Suore Missionarie della Carità per partecipare a questo progetto, mediante le comunità presenti in Kenya. Sarà un’occasione per rinnovare la sensibilità verso le persone colpite da calamità, già manifestata da Don Orione e da tanti Confratelli nella storia antica e recente della Congregazione. Sarà anche occasione per far sentire alla giovane Famiglia orionina in Kenya che c’è una grande Famiglia solidale, la Congregazione, pronta all’aiuto. 

IL NOSTRO INTERVENTO: Ci occuperemo soprattutto di aiuto alimentare a bambini e ragazzi portando il cibo direttamente nelle scuole e nei dispensari sanitari sparsi nel territorio. I ragazzi non vanno a scuola a causa di mancanza di soldi e anche a causa dello stile di vita pastorale familiare. Ci hanno indicato che la cosa migliore è aiutare i ragazzi non dando cibo o soldi per loro nelle famiglie (andrebbero poi ad altri) ma portando cibo e aiuti direttamente alle scuole. Cosi le famiglie saranno invogliate a mandare i figli a scuola perché possono mangiare. Similmente aiuti nutrizionali e medicinali per i piccoli non saranno distribuiti nelle famiglie, ma dati nei dispensari sanitari sparsi nel territorio per essere sicuri che vadano direttamente ai bambini.
SERVONO PERSONE VOLONTARIE: Ci hanno chiesto che possibilmente ci siano dei volontari che, con un proprio mezzo, provvedano alla distribuzione di alimenti e medicine nelle scuole e nei presidi sanitari. Faremo una base operativa a Nairobi-Langata, presso la nostra casa, e una a Meru, presso la casa delle PSMC, che è più vicina, a 300 km da Marsabit.Coordinatore generale dell’intera operazione è Don Alessio Cappelli e la Fondazione Don Orione. Coordinatore in Kenya è P. Paul Mboche Mwangi con la collaborazione del Ch. Ian Kiprotich Katah e del postulante Anthony Gachau. Volontari: servono piccole équipe di volontari laici che vengano in Kenya per circa un mese e fra di essi almeno uno che sappia bene l’inglese. Sarebbe ottima anche la presenza di qualche nostro religioso che conosca inglese.
SERVE DENARO: Direzione generale: ha già destinato una prima quota per iniziare il progetto DON ORIONE FOR MARSABIT ed ha aperto una sottoscrizione di denaro da inviare direttamente all’Economato generale specificando la causale DON ORIONE FOR MARSABIT oppure, per chi desidera la ricevuta fiscale, da inviare alla Fondazione Don Orione.Ogni Provincia e comunità: promuova quanto prima iniziative per far conoscere il progetto, invitando a pregare e a offrire denaro per il progetto.Acquisto di cibo, alimenti pediatrici e medicinali si farà in Kenya, con depositi a Nairobi e a Meru. Tra gli acquisti indispensabili ci sarà anche quello di una robusta auto cabinata, adatta a portare gli aiuti nei villaggi sparsi nel territorio dove non ci sono strade asfaltate. La raccolta di denaro avverrà mediante una colletta promossa in Congregazione, soprattutto in ottobre, mese missionario. Ci sono fondate speranze in un finanziamento anche da parte della Conferenza Episcopale italiana.
Mettiamoci in quest’opera di bene con semplicità e fede per renderci strumenti della Provvidenza di Dio per persone particolarmente svantaggiate e in emergenza. Attendo quanto prima disponibilità di persone e anche di denaro da destinare a DON ORIONE FOR MARSABIT. DON ORIONE FOR MARSABITAPPEAL OF THE SUPERIOR GENERAL TO HELP THE PEOPLES OF THE HORN OF AFRICA

Dear Confreres and Lay People of the Orionine Family,
I am writing to you from our community at Langata, Nairobi, Kenya. For about a month my heart was yearning to invite the Congregation to help the peoples of the “Horn of Africa” (Somalia, Ethiopia, and North East Kenya) hit by the grave food crisis which is killing thousands of people.Together with the Delegate for the English-speaking missions, Fr. Malcolm Dyer, we have made contact with the bishop of Marsabit, the Right Reverend Peter Kihara Kariuki, already known to us, first by telephone and then during a visit to Marsabit by Fr Malcolm on 5th-6th September (see attached information). The Mother General, Sr. Maria Mabel has agreed to the participation of the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity in this project, through the communities present in Kenya.The Bishop has welcomed our intention of helping the Diocese as true Providence. He has indicated to us various types of intervention to help the weakest.Marsabit is the diocese in the North-East region of Kenya, most dramatically hit by drought. What is more, that part of Kenya also has to cope with an enormous mass of refugees who are escaping from bordering Ethiopia hoping to find something better. Dadaab, a town near the frontier with Somalia, hosts at the moment the greatest complex of refugee camps. According to the estimates of the U.N., the various camps are holding about 400,000 Somali refugees.
The “DON ORIONE FOR MARSABIT” PROJECT
We have, together with Fr Eldo Musso, councillor for works of charity, Fr Malcolm, delegate for the mission in Kenya, Fr Alessio Cappelli, in charge of the Fondazione Don Orione and the Confreres of Kenya, worked out a project called “Don Orione for Marsabit”, to help the people, and, above all, the children of Marsabit. It will be an opportunity to renew that sensitivity to people struck by disasters, already shown by Don Orione and many other Confreres in the past and more recent history of the Congregation. It will also be a chance to show the members of the young Family of Don Orione in Kenya, that there is a great and caring Family united with them, the Congregation, ready to help.
OUR SPECIFIC ROLEWe shall concentrate above all on giving food aid to babies and children, bringing food directly to schools the health facilities spread around the territory. The children are not going to school because of a lack of money and because of their family life style as pastoralists. They have indicated to us that the best way of helping the children is not to give food or money to their families (by tradition these would be distributed to all) but to give food and assistance directly to the schools. Similarly nutritional help and medicines for the smallest will not be distributed to the families, but given through the health facilities spread throughout the territory to be sure that they go directly to the little children.
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDEDThey have asked that, if possible, there should be volunteers with their own vehicle, who will see to the distribution of food and medicine to the schools, dispensaries and hospitals.We shall make an operations base at our house in Langata, Nairobi, and at the house of the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity, at Meru, which is nearer, at a distance of 300km from Marsabit.The General Co-ordinator of the entire operation is Fr Alessio Cappelli and the Fondazione Don Orione (Don Orione Foundation).The Co-ordinator in Kenya is Fr Paul Mboche Mwangi with the assistance of Br Ian Kiprotich Katah and postulant Anthony Gachau.Volunteers: small teams of volunteer lay people who come to Kenya for about a month and among these at least one who speaks English well. It would be ideal if also there was a confrere who knows English well.
MONEY IS NEEDED The General Office: has already set aside a first tranche to begin the DON ORIONE FOR MARSABIT project and has opened an account for money to be sent directly to the Bursar General’s office, using the payee name DON ORIONE FOR MARSABIT.Every Province and community: should promote activities, as soon as possible, to make known the project, inviting people to pray and send money for the project.Purchase of food, special food for children and medicines will be done in Kenya, with stores at Nairobi and Meru. Among the indispensable purchases will be a double -cabin pick up to bring assistance to the villages scattered in the territory, where there are no tarmac or smooth roads. The collection of money will take place via a collection, which is already under way, promoted by the Congregation, above all in October, the month of the missions, and through the Co-ordinator in each nation to be sent to the Don Orione Foundation, and SEV- Orione. We have strong hopes that the Bishops’ Conference of Italy will provide some finance.
So, let us involve ourselves, with simplicity and faith, in this good work, to become instruments of the Providence of God for particularly disadvantaged people in an emergency situation. I am waiting to receive, as soon as possible, offers of commitment from people and also money to dedicate to DON ORIONE FOR MARSABIT. May Don Orione bless from heaven all those who participate in this sign of the fatherhood of God and the motherhood of the Church.
